diff gears...

hi on a resent trip to the local classic car show..the was a austin a35 saloon,with a 950cc engine he asked me after the show to go out for a run..like the old days..i agread..so i let him go first and i followed...mine is a 1967 a 35 van..1098 with the ribbed box..when it came to hills mine was like a slug compaired to his car..he said their some thing realy wrong with it..so strip your engine down..and renew it..i asked him about his car..both cars are set up the same carb,ect.but my van was used all its life as a van.and had a 4.22.1 diff..as he used the van for towing..and the guy with the saloon..his diff is 4.55.1..also my speedo is miles out..any help will be very greatfull
