Dynamo - Condensor

I'm in a state of confusinon (nothing new!)

I removed the dynamo and there was a condensor (as in the distributer) wired onto the large (charge) output from the dynamo with the condensor body clamped to earth.

I am replacing the dynamo with an alternator and have assumed that the condensor is superfluous and can therefore go, does anyone know differently - also out of interest, does anyone know what the condensor may / should have been doing?
