Where do I start?

Hi, proud owner of a 2 dr A35 Black Saloon, not bad but needs a bit of tlc. Anyone got a checklist for restoring? I was hoping to potter around in her this year, and then start work, she needs new rubbers around windows etc but as she will need a respray at some point then not sure if it worth doing now. As regards a respray, I am concerned that there are some really bodgers out there, anyone recommend what to look for? Also, if I was to change her colour, apart for advising DVLA, is there any problem with this?
